Sharing their Memory

Distinctive Life is your source for cremation and memorial personalization.

Let us help you share the stories that made them special. Bringing family and friends together to share memories and celebrate the spirit of your loved one is an important part of the healing process, best served though a personlized ceremony and tribute.

Celebration of Life Memorial Service

We hear very often, “I don’t want a traditional funeral, I want my friends and family to celebrate my life.”  A ‘Celebration of Life’ memorial service is a wonderful way to honor this request for your loved one.

What is a Celebration of Life memorial service?

A Celebration of Life service tells the story of the your loved one’s life through personalization.  Sharing memories and laughter is encouraged at a Celebration of Life memorial service.  Taking the time to express and share the love that you felt for that person can offer a break from the sadness, tension and stress of the loss, even if for a brief time.

A Celebration of Life event does not need to take place in the funeral home – the event can be held at someone’s home, in a garden, at a baseball stadium, the possibilities are endless.

Be a guest  Not a host - Let Distinctive Life help you

When a funeral or memorial service focuses on celebrating life, it lifts the survivors up and helps promote discussion of positive memories and story sharing.  There will always be sadness in loss, but remembering the distinctive life lived and smiling about shared memories can put you on the path to healing.  Did your loved one enjoy margaritas and Mexican food?  Let the staff at Distinctive Life provide a margarita machine and handle catering.  Did your loved one enjoy football or ride motorcycles?  Allow us to take the lead and organize a tailgating event or a tribute ride in their honor.  Whatever the focus, we will handle each and every detail so that you can participate in this final farewell event as a guest, not the host.

At Distinctive Life, we understand the importance of expressing and sharing the love that you felt for that person. Whether you wish to memorialize your loved one with a personlized memorial, a piece of jewelry or a special keepsake, a lasting momento will help you cherish the memory of your loved one.

Call or visit any of our locations to receive guidance in planning a personlized event to memorialize your loved one's Distinctive Life.

Professional Pre-Planning Services

Distinctive Life Cremations & Funerals offers professional pre-planning services at all of our locations. Just like a life insurance policy, pre-planning helps reduce the burden on a family during an emotionally difficult time. It also gives your family – and you – the opportunity to openly express feelings on a personal and important matter.

Finally, it ensures that your wishes are precisely followed. Your family won't need to plan a service based on what they think you want, but what they know you've already planned.

Additionally, pre-planning that includes financial arrangements can help offset the effects of inflation reducing the potential stress to your family during an already stressful time. Even if you do not wish to make advance financial arrangements, you can still make your service choices in advance and keep them on file at Distinctive Life Funeral Homes to help guide your family when the time comes.

For more information about pre-planning in the State of Texas, the Texas Department of Banking answers many questions related to prefunded, prearranged funeral contacts. Visit www.prepaidfunerals.texas.gov today.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Distinctive Life different from traditional funeral homes?

We're much more than a traditional funeral home. We're a cremation and funeral concierge service offering a better way to plan and create remembrance services that are as distinctive as your loved one.

We believe that death is a part of life, and the activities that commemorate that life event should – as with other life events such as births and weddings – reflect the unique personality of your loved one. You don't have to come to us to plan your loved one's service. We'll come to you wherever and whenever you need us. We'll create memorials/funerals in your house of worship, your home, your loved one's favorite vacation spot or in our beautiful locations in Houston and Dallas. We're entirely flexible and focused on helping you follow your loved one's wishes, offering closure to you and your family, and giving you the support you need when you need it.

Do we have to use a funeral home for a visitation or a service?

Absolutely not. In fact, Distinctive Life specializes in planning and managing visitations, memorials and funeral services outside of our funeral home. We can easily create services in any location you'd like – whether it's your house of worship, your home or even a favorite landmark or vacation spot. And, we can even meet with you to plan all the services in your home, a medical facility or anywhere you'd like. We'll come to you whenever and wherever you need us. As a cremation and funeral concierge service, your family – not our funeral home – is the focus.

Why are Distinctive Life's services more affordable than old-style funeral homes?

Unlike traditional, ornate "brick-and-mortar" funeral homes with high overhead costs, Distinctive Life places its focus on providing personalized cremation and funeral services to families in the location of their choice. While we can host small visitations, memorials and funeral services, most of our families choose to have their services at other locations – such as their house of worship, their home or even a beloved landmark or vacation spot. By maintaining lower overhead in our facility, we're able to pass on significant savings to our families without compromising the quality of our personal care and service.

Is everything included in the price given by Distinctive Life?

All charges involving our services and merchandise are available from our professional staff. We are happy to provide a general Distinctive Life price list with all charges and answer any questions you may have.

Why do people choose cremation over traditional burial?

There are a number of reasons why cremation is becoming increasingly popular in North America and is expected to outnumber traditional burials by 2018. Among the most popular reasons:

Economics – cremation is less expensive than traditional burials.
Religious & cultural acceptance – many religions and cultures that previously frowned on cremation now are more open-minded about the process.

Range of options – cremation offers huge range of memorialization options, such as scattering, placing in multiple locations, and incorporating into jewelry or decorative keepsake urns.

Geography – it is easy to transport the cremated remains of loved ones who've moved away back "home." Cremation also allows you to plan memorial services at a convenient time for extended family to attend.

"Green" Factor – cremation takes up less ground space and leaves a smaller environmental footprint.

Splitting of remains - many families find it comforting to divide the remains for different families and ceremonies.

How do I know cremation is acceptable to my religion?

This question is best answered by your clergyperson. Most Protestant denominations permit cremation, and the Catholic Church allows cremation, provided that, "it does not demonstrate a denial of faith in the resurrection of the body." (Catechism of the Catholic Church) While traditional Jewish law forbids cremation, more and more synagogues are accommodating families. Most Islamic sects still forbid cremation.

How can I be sure that all my loved one's remains are kept separate from others?

Distinctive Life has stringent identification and operating procedures in place to ensure your loved one is treated with the utmost respect and care throughout the cremation process. We are happy to talk with you in more detail about our processes, which we've found gives many of our families peace of mind about this concern.

Do I have to buy a casket if we're choosing cremation?

No. In fact, Texas law states that a funeral home cannot require you to have your loved one placed in a casket before cremation. All that is required is a rigid container that is cremated with the body.

What are my options for cremation services?

All the same services are available with cremation. In fact, you can even arrange a visitation and viewing of your loved one before cremation takes place.

Is embalming required if choosing cremation?

No, unless there is to be a visitation with an open casket before the cremation.

Can the cremation be witnessed by the family?

Yes. We know that some religions prefer or require that family members be in the same building – or even the same room – in which the cremation is taking place. At Distinctive Life, we'll do all we can to ensure your beliefs and wishes are honored at every step in the process.

What can I do with the cremated remains?

There's an extensive array of possibilities. You may wish to bury the remains in the ground or in a niche (a space in a columbarium – a self-standing granite structure – where the urn containing cremated remains is placed). You might opt to keep the remains in an urn in your home, or divide the remains into two or more urns for multiple family members to keep. Another option is to have the remains turned into cremation jewelry or even cremation diamonds.

Laws for scattering remains vary from state to state. In Texas, you may legally scatter remains in a designated area of a cemetery; on uninhabited land, ocean or other body of water; and/or on private property with written consent of the owner.

What is a direct cremation service?

Direct cremation is cremation chosen without any kind of accompanying service – no memorial, traditional or graveside service. With a direct cremation, we'll pick up your loved one from their location, hold them at our facility until all permits are received, then transport them to the cremation facility. Once the cremation is complete, you then can come to our funeral home at a convenient time for you to retrieve the remains.

Are there any special requirements or forms needed to be buried in a national cemetery?

Yes, the Veterans Administration requires proof of honorable discharge be provided to the funeral home for all burials at a national cemetery. A veteran of the armed services discharged under conditions other than dishonorable – as well as their eligible spouse and dependents – may petition for burial at a national cemetery. You'll find the needed forms here. You may either complete them online and hit the "send" button to submit them directly to us, or you may print and fax or email back to us as soon as possible.

How do I arrange a gun salute for my loved one?

Anyone entitled to a military funeral (usually anyone on active duty, honorably discharged veterans or military retirees) are entitled to three rifle volleys from an honor guard team. The flag detail often slips three shell-casings – each representing one volley - into the folded flag before presenting it to the family. "Taps" also is played at every military funeral. The Distinctive Life staff is experienced in arranging military funerals and will manage all aspects of the honor guard salute for your family, ensuring that your loved one is memorialized with full honors and well-deserved respect.

A 21-gun salute is reserved for the funerals of U.S. Presidents, ex-Presidents, or President-elects, with lower ranking military and civilian U.S. leaders receiving a lesser number of guns based on their protocol rank.

A bit of history about the volley salute: it's an old battlefield custom that two warring sides would cease hostilities to clear their dead from the battlefield. The firing of three volleys meant that the dead had been properly cared for and the side was ready to resume the battle.

What is the significance of a funeral service?

From the beginning of recorded history, societies have honored those who died with a traditional ceremony. The purpose of the ritual was to send the deceased on his or her journey into the afterlife. Today, many experts agree that the benefits of a service also are for those who are left behind after a death. A "closure" of sorts must occur to help survivors adjust to their loss and recognize that a death has occurred. A funeral service provides the opportunity for friends and family to celebrate the life that was lived and allow the healing process to begin.

What types of caskets are available, and why are some more expensive than others?

Caskets are made of either metal (bronze, copper or steel) or wood. Prices vary depending on the exterior and interior materials used. Bronze, a semiprecious metal, is more expensive than steel. Mahogany, a rare hardwood, is more expensive than the readily available softwood pine.

What is embalming, and is it necessary?

Embalming is the temporary preservation of a deceased's remains. It is not required by law but is common practice when a viewing is planned.

What traditional funeral options are offered by Distinctive Life?

There are many traditional funeral options available. Depending on your family's beliefs and traditions, we can tailor a funeral service to meet any need.

What is involved in a graveside service?

A graveside service is chosen when a traditional or memorial service is not desired and simply consists of family and friends gathering in a cemetery to remember the deceased immediately before burial.

Do I have to use the funeral home associated with the cemetery?

No, you don't – in fact, we find that most families do not. We have arranged burials at cemeteries throughout Texas and can easily arrange your loved one's burial or urn internment at the cemetery of your choosing.

What do I do if death occurs at home?

Call us anytime, day or night. We are available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, to immediately help you and your family.
