David Roy Mathewson

David Roy Mathewson, age 60, was born in Cleveland, Ohio and was raised in Lewiston, Michigan. He died at his home in Coppell, Texas on Thursday May 29th surrounded by loved ones. As a child David loved the outdoors swimming, boating, biking, snowmobiling, skiing, cooking on a fire. Trouble usually found him first; but he was an expert at getting out of trouble as easily as he got into trouble, lol. He graduated from Johannesburg-Lewiston High School in 1982. He then went to the Culinary Institute of America in New York in 1983 where he met Nina Yagud. They later moved to Texas together where they married and had their only child, Jennifer. David loved to cook. He was always grilling, trying new recipes and watching cooking shows. He spent his career in Hospitality as a Chef, Sales and Management. He loved his choice of food service as a career. He created numerous spectacular culinary delights, and he loved to entertain his friends. David was a man of contrasts—sharp, witty, and often blunt, but underneath that exterior was a huge soft heart. He had a big personality. He was the kind of person who told it like it was and could be very prickly. David enjoyed nature- always noticing a bunny in the bushes or a squirrel on the fence. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, swimming in his pool, and hanging out with his buddies. His most recent favorite spot was Chill Bar & Grill, in Lewisville, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father William Thomas Mathewson and his mother Margaret Whittier Mathewson. He is survived by his only child, the highlight of his life, Jennifer Mathewson, her husband Jeff, his step grandchildren Abram and Addison. Siblings: Wayne Krause (Janet) of Woodbridge, VA; Kim Fox of Mio, MI; Cindy Alwood (Jim) of Mt.Pleasant, MI; Scott Mathewson (Susie) of Lewiston, MI; Linda Carver (Rick) of Kissimmee, IN; Kim Schramm (Tony) of Shelbyville, IN; and Tom Mathewson of Shelbyville IN. Many nieces, nephews and children of friends who looked up to him. He leaves behind a wide circle of friends. He had the type of personality that collected people everywhere he moved over the years. Jim Yarema and family, Linda de Boer and family, Todd and Lu Knippenberg, Curtis Nesbit, Mike, Chris, Raul, Billy, Scott, Gordo, Robert, Pete (RIP), and Susan Bergakker. Many more not mentioned. In honor of David’s wishes, there will not be a formal service. Instead, we invite those who knew and loved him to celebrate his life in their own way—perhaps by cooking something special, raising a glass, sharing a story, or simply taking a quiet moment to notice the world around them, the way David did. He will be missed deeply, remembered often, and loved always.
