John Michael Woods Sr.

John Michael Woods, Sr. passed away December 18, 2014 after fighting a good fight. He was born January 15, 1946 in Fayetteville, North Carolina to Margaret Inez Calcutt and Walter Godfrey Woods, the second of four children. He was the son and nephew of WWII Army Veterans. John was a ham radio operator who desired to see the world at a young age. He received his Ham Radio license at the age of 14, making him the youngest operator in Florida. He would later receive his electrical engineering degree at the University of Houston. This enabled him to travel the world working in The Netherlands, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Russia, Pakistan, Libya, Zaire, Angola, Costa Rica, France, Colombia, and Peru and satisfied his yearning for adventure. John also worked as a contractor for NASA in 1969. John was a citizen of the world that considered Houston home, where he spent most of his life. Upon retiring, John returned to his hometown of Lakeland, Florida, where he rekindled old relationships, made new friends, and enjoyed many great years. John was charming, gracious, and full of life. He was an avid music lover, excellent dancer, nature lover, cultural enthusiast, and Renaissance man. John lived a very joyous life as a father, brother, and uncle whose words of wisdom, memories of joy, and helping spirit, will forever be in our hearts. John was preceded in death by his grandfather, Joseph R. Calcutt, father, Walter Godfrey Woods; children Kaye Diane Woods, John Michael Woods Jr., and granddaughter Elizabeth Anne Petruska. John is survived by his daughters Lisa Michele Lobbes, Carol Anne (Steven) Antoine, Louise Catherine Woods; son, John Peter Woods; former wives, Mary G. Woods and Lucia G. Woods; brother Joseph (Margie) Woods; sisters, Catherine (Michael) McPhee & Patsie Johnson; grandchildren David Anthony Young, Tamara Kaye Guerrero, Calandra Celeste Key, Jennifer Diane Petruska, Benjamin Alexander Gonzalez, Azure Rain Gonzalez, Christopher Aron Parker, Czamia Lauren Parker; and extended family. Funeral service and visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 in the morning on Tuesday December 23, 2014, with Funeral Service to follow at Willow Meadows Baptist Church at 4300 West Bellfort in Houston, TX, followed by interment at Glenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MD Anderson.
