Patrick Francis Hanes (Pat) passed away on June 27, 2014 surrounded by his family following a valiant year long battle with cancer. While he may have lost the battle, he was ultimately victorious over death as he now rests in the eternal embrace of our Heavenly Father. We celebrated Pat's spiritual rebirth by baptism into Christ's Kingdom on Good Friday, April 18th, 2014. He is home. Pat was born in Pontiac, Michigan on July 21,1940. He attended Michigan State University and was fiercely loyal to his school, even though he lived most of his life in Houston. Pat is predeceased by his parents Francis and Pauline Hanes, daughter Julie, and his beloved dog Scooter. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Judy; his daughters Jennifer Scilley Murrill and Heather Scilley von Sternberg; his five beloved grandchildren Heather Murrill, Matthew Murrill, Jackson Murrill, Gabriel von Sternberg, and Sophia von Sternberg, whom he cherished beyond measure; brother Michael Hanes and wife Teresa; sister Kathy Sherman; niece Kara Bovensiepen, husband Sasha and their daughter Leah; nephew Nathanael Hanes, wife Kaylyn and their son Thaddeus; and his pets Skippy, Cali and Sterling. Pat was a simple man in the best of ways. He was generous, loving, dependable, kind, and had a quick wit. He was always willing to help out in any way when called upon. He had a gentle spirit and was quick to offer a smile to anyone. Cooking and baking for his family was a favorite pastime. His strawberry shortcake and blueberry pancakes were legendary! He liked all sports but his passion was golf. His favorite places to travel were to Las Vegas and Cabo San Lucas, where he would watch the waves roll in from the Pacific Ocean for for hours. Pat will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his true and honest friendship. The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at North Cypress Medical Center for their kindness, compassion and great care given to Pat. We also wish to express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for all the kind thoughts, support and prayers during his illness and our time of grief. A private memorial service will be held in Cabo San Lucas at a later date. Pat was an outspoken advocate for homeless and neglected animals and adopted many.
