Sorry to say that my Dad, Bill Hammond, lost his fight with cancer last night. He was a wonderful man that was my inspiration on how to take full advantage of the time we are given.

In addition to a fantastic son, brother, husband, father, father in law, uncle and grandfather he was a marathoner, century cyclist, soccer player, soccer coach, Indian Guides and Cub Scout leader, musician, writer, poet, community volunteer, Army Lieutenant, Jimmy Buffett tailgater, outdoor explorer, a helping hand to anyone in need, and often a surrogate father figure to my friends growing up. He was the ultimate "Cool Dad", never met a stranger, and was your friend.

Patty and family, we got to know Bill through John Stack Ministries. We worked on the BonaResponds hurricane cleanup efforts he led in Wilmington last year and Texas 2 years ago & the Love for Kids efforts he led. We biked and hiked with him at the Hotter then Hell and your beautiful home in Pagosa Springs. We loved Bill’s positive attitude, sense of humor and his desire to make the world a better place, especially for those in need. We will truly miss our dear friend and so very sorry for your loss. God bless.

Back in 1960 I was an exchange student in the home of Bill's parents in Wellsville , New York . In the mean time Bill came to Ecuador and stayed in my parents'home for three months . The following year I was invited to live in their home and did it for a whole year where I had the great joy to share a wonderfull live with my " brothers" John and Peggy. This was the begining of a marvelous , unforgettable , most sincere , unique love that I received in my live that came from Bill and the entire Hammond's family .
Some twenty years later Patty and Bill came to visit Ecuador along with two other very close friends and stayed at my home .Altogether , its been sixty wonderfull years that our friendship grew and Bill has left great memories imprinted in my heart as the brother that I neved had .
My sincerest condonlences to you Patty and family .

Bill was a great neighbor and a friend. He served on the City of Richardson Plan Commission for many years and did a fine job. He'll be missed.

Truly one of the finest, kindest, and most fun men of all time. I've known him seventy years and count myself lucky. My husband, two of my daughters, and my stepson had the good fortune to meet him and all thought the best of him. Sorry you lost him and to have lost him but I know he's at peace.

I worked with Bill for many years in the insurance business. So sad to hear of his passing. I will miss getting together to reminisce about the good ol' days. He was a true professional and a gentleman. He was really fun to be around. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Regards, Wayne Ottoway

I'm very thankful to have crossed paths with Bill. I've been lucky, through his vast network of friends, collogues and clients (which are all synonymous when referencing Bill), to share many laughs with him. Whether laughing with him or at him, I'll miss him. He was a great man with an amazing and supportive family. Godspeed to you all.

Patty and Family - my deepest sympathies for the loss of your husband and father. I met Bill early in my risk management career, when he was at A&A. Since then we have worked together at several different employers for me and for him. We became friends as well as colleagues. In the recent years Bill invited me to Pagosa Springs on several occasions. I really wish we could have made that happen. The last time I saw Bill was earlier this year when Richard Dauterive and I met Bill for lunch. He was in good spirits and looked well. He shared with us about the illness. I have been praying for all of you during this time and I am deeply saddened by Bill's passing. I am continuing to pray that your family and Bill's many friends will be comforted during this time. Bill was a great man, and I am so glad that I can be counted as one of his friends. God bless. - Tom Phillips

Patty and Family- Of course, it is with great sadness that I acknowledge Bill's passing. At the same time, what an honor and thrill it has been to have known him! Bill was one of the most active community volunteers (and organizers) that I have ever met. His hiking, biking and running were prolific and filled with memories that can't be topped! My favorite Bill experience was our running of The Cowtown in 2017 (yes, Bill ran a marathon in 2017!). Part of the experience that made this so memorable was that, in some small way, I felt like I was giving back to Bill. At the same time, we talked (you can guess who did most of the talking) and laughed for 5 hours. It was part of the "Bill experience" that we picked up a third runner around mile 24 because his name was "William" and Bill just had to get to know him. That was Bill- forever curious and always encouraging others to reach that summit! We will all miss him dearly at the round table.

Patty and Family--I am deeply saddened to hear of Bill's passing. I met him over two and a half decades ago when he convinced me that he was the right man to handle the largest insurance risk that my company was facing. His knowledge and persistence started as a business relationship but developed into a twenty-six-year friendship. He was one of the kindest, most optimistic, and funniest men I ever met. I, like all his friends and colleagues, will miss him greatly. My deepest sympathies to you and the family. Richard Dauterive

My Friend

Tom Fox on Jul 26, 2020

Saddened to learn of my friend Bill's passing. I had the good fortune to meet and become acquainted with Bill last June while living in Colorado. Within minutes of meeting, I knew this kind, caring, intelligent and very interesting man was someone I wanted to get to know better. Through our frequent talks, sharing wine and food and watching him perform at open mic venues, I got to know a beautiful soul. Knowing that Bill had hiked many tall mountains in Colorado, I was surprised when he told me that he had not yet hiked Pagosa Peak, but it was on his bucket list. Having climbed it for the second time in September of 2018, I told myself I was done with that challenge/experience. However, when I learned of my new friend's desire to hike it, I offered to accompany him. The hike was challenging but ever so rewarding, Bill was the master of knowing how to live life to its fullest while enhancing the lives of everyone he touched. Love you and miss you my brother.
